Powerboat Tuition: Intermediate Level

This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques

During the two days you also cover revision of the PB2 syllabus with more advanced boat handling in different conditions. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course providing them with knowledge and an understanding of navigation to Day Skipper level, visiting another port by day and understanding of local bye laws and pilotage into those ports. Whilst it is not obligitory students will ideally hold a VHF/SRC operators certificate and an acceptable first aid certificate which includes the treatment of hypothermia, cold shock and drowning.

Day one of the Intermediate course will largely be local and include theory and navigation preparing for day two out on the water putting the theory into practice including navigating around the Solent and pilotage into a variety of different ports, understanding the 'Spider's Web' and other methods of estimating positions. Whilst the intermediate course is a 'day time' course it prepares the student for night time navigation, perhaps returning to their base in failing light. Added to this can be a Nighttime experience, the Instructor will give you the opportunity of experiencing 'being out there in the dark' seeing and understanding the lights and an entry to harbours.
